The successful NRHA Germany SSP is striking a new innovative path with
SSP 2017

Press: The STALLION SERVICE PROGRAM (SSP) of NRHA Germany is leading in Europe. 177 well-known stallions were nominated in 2016 for the breeding season 2017. More than in any other stallion program in Europe. Could you please explain the goals of the nomination program of NRHA Germany?

Gerd:  The Stallion Service Program of NRHA Germany e.V. was designed 25 years ago to assist stallion owners to introduce their offspring to the public and to present the offspring in Reining competitions. The nomination fees are allocated to the purse for the NRHA Germany Breeders Futurity (3- and 4- year old horses) and for the NRHA Germany Breeders Derby (5- to 8-year old horses).

Press: What were the reasons to modify the existing program?

Gerd: Even though the SSP was very successful in the past, many changes and developments in the Reining industry over the years are affecting the SSP. For the last ten years we observe decreasing numbers of enrolled stallions. As a consequence the prize money was reduced, which also influenced the number of entries. Availability of frozen semen worldwide affects the number of breedings of the so-called smaller stallions. The Breeders Derby and the Breeders Futurity had lost some attractiveness. During the last two years NRHA Germany introduced a new partner program and received considerable support by sponsors and partners. We are very thankful for their continuing support. In 2016 and 2017 NRHA Germany Breeders Futurity and Breeders Derby offered the highest payout in the history of these events. To ensure sustainable growth of the Breeders Futurity and Derby as leading reining events and the sport of Reining in the future the SSP needed a redesign.

Press: Which goals and improvements are achieved by enhancing the SSP?

Gerd: First, stallion nomination fee is reduced. This will help stallion owners with small breeding numbers. But most importantly, a foal nomination program is added to the SSP. To be eligible to enter the Breeders Futurity and Derby, horses have to be nominated in the SSP. The nomination fee for offspring of nominated stallions is lower.  A good reason to breed to stallions nominated to the SSP. In the future, the SSP offers an incentive for both, the stallion and foal nominator.

Press:
What exactly are the changes for the stallion nomination fee?

Gerd: In the past, the nomination fee for the stallions was 700.00 € incl. administration, promotion and VAT. Many stallion owners asked for changes in the structure of the nomination fee and for a reduction of the fee. In the future, from SSP 2017 (breeding season 2018) on the stallion nomination fee is reduced to 500.00€. The complete amount will be allocated to the purses without any deductions. The costs for administration, promotion, etc. will be covered by NRHA Germany.

Press:
What is the nomination period?

Gerd: The nomination period for stallions starts after the Breeders Futurity before the year of breeding and ends 31 July of the respective breeding year. The nomination period for weanlings starts at August 1 of year of birth and ends January 10 of the following year. The nomination period for yearling and older horses starts January 1 and ends December 31 of the respective year.

Press:
Could you please explain the Stallion Incentive?

Gerd:
5% of the money earned by an offspring of a nominated stallion at the NRHA Germany Breeders Futurity or Breeders Derby is paid to the nominator of the stallion. To receive a share of the prize money is a good reason to nominate a stallion and a good chance to get at least the nomination money back.

Press: What about the foal nomination?

Gerd:
To further strengthen and increase the number of entries, the Breeders Futurity and Derby is not limited to offspring of nominated stallions anymore. In order to enter in the Breeders Futurity or Derby, from 2022 on all horses must be nominated in the SSP. No matter if the sire is nominated or not. The nomination fee for offspring of nominated stallions is substantially lower. The foal nomination fee is completely allocated to the Breeders Futurity and Derby. There are no additional costs for administration and promotion of the program. 5% of the money earned by a horse at the NRHA Germany Breeders Futurity or Breeders Derby is paid to the nominator of the horse as Foal Incentive. At the time of nomination no membership or license fees are charged. All these innovative changes are aimed to help stallion owners and breeders to promote their breeding program with affordable costs in one of the most successful programs in the Reining industry in Europe. Nomination of stallions is even more important in the future, since the nomination fee for offspring of nominated stallions is considerable lower. An important reason for breeders selecting stallions.

Press:
What are the foal nomination fees?

Gerd: The nomination fee for weanlings of nominated stallions is 150.00€, for non-nominated stallions 300.00€.  The nomination fees for older horses are higher analogically. The NRHA Germany SSP offers highly competitive fees even on an international level. Every nominated horse is eligible to enter for six years, beginning at 3year old up to 8year old, in NRHA Germany Breeders classes.

Press:
What year starts the foal nomination?

Gerd:
The foal nomination will start with foals born in 2019, which means SSP year 2017 and breeding season 2018.

Press:
How does the nomination process work?

Gerd: We would like to make it very easy for everybody to nominate foals or stallions.  Recently, NRHA Germany launched a new web site www.sspnrhagermany.de to do all nominations online, beginning with the stallion nomination in 2017/2018. As mentioned before, the nomination of foals will start in 2019. For every stallion all information which might be important for breeders can be published. We will offer the opportunity to put all information for foals/horses online in order to reach interested buyers. Of course, the NRHA office will be happy to assist in the nomination.

Press: Where can I find all information and entry forms?

Gerd: At www.sspnrhagermany.de or www.nrha.de. You will find the complete information and conditions in German, English and Italian for download. Of course, our head office will be available for further information.

Press: Are there more innovations?

Gerd: Yes, from 2017 on, NRHA Germany offers all Breeders Futurity and Derby Classes Level 1 to 4 as NRHA approved classes. The NRHA Restricted European Eligibility Policy applies. We also introduced Breeders Futurity and Breeders Derby Jackpot Classes. These classes are open for riders, NonPro, Youth and Open, which don’t make it back to the finals. There is no extra office fee, judges fee, etc. 100% of the entry fee goes to the prize money; no retainage. This gives every rider a second chance to present their horse and win some money.
